Classic Licensing 101

Classic Licensing for Fiction Writers

The Basics of Licensing for Fiction Writers

Licensing is everything for making money as a fiction writer. When you place a story with a magazine, you are licensing intellectual property that the story is a part of. Or you put a story up for readers on Amazon or Kobo, you are giving Amazon and Kobo a license to relicense your IP. But that is only the very, very basic aspect.

There is so, so much more spreading off of your intellectual property.

Just a few of these are:

-- Books

-- Gaming

-- Movie/television

-- Merchandise

-- Toys

-- Derivative spin-offs

-- Experience

And so much more. And each of the above categories has many, many branches.

So much of this seems impossible to fiction writers. But it is not, and over time the licensing will become your largest, by far, income streams. Far surpassing book sales. But first you have to understand the huge world of licensing is even out there, and how to navigate it.

This Licensing 101 class is a basic class of all the fundamentals you need to understand to even advance farther. And yes, there will be Licensing 201, 301, and 401. There is that much to cover, six weeks at a time.

This first class will cover such topics as how to view your IP, at a deep level what is IP, the basics of book licensing, secondary book licensing and cash streams, the many details involved with an IP and how too pick one, value of cross promotion, series web sites, and a bunch of business for starting up licensing.
